The Free State of Bavaria has 71 districts, the head of the administration is the directly and personally elected district administrator. On March 15, 2020, this position was newly elected in the 64 counties in the course of the local elections.
The district councils were confirmed or newly elected in 46 counties. The parties that have taken part alone: CSU 32 (- 3), free voters 1 (-1), Greens 1 (+ 1), SPD 1 (+/-). 11 district council posts related to joint election proposals or electoral groups from different parties and lists. This includes: CSU-led 6 (+ 5), FW-led 3 (+3) and 2 on other groups. There is a runoff election in 18 counties. In 14 the CSU has to defend its district office, in 2 the SPD, in one the free voters and in one district the Greens. Mayor elections were held in 24 out of 25 of the independent cities on Sunday. The incumbent was re-elected in eight of these cities, and the run-off elections in 16 cities. In each of the five largest cities in Bavaria, run-off elections are held - all between CSU and SPD candidates.
In the state capital Munich, Mayor Reiter (SPD) has to vote in the run-off election with around 47 %, he reached 47.9 % against CSU challenger Kristina Frank (21.3 %). The run-off elections are scheduled for March 29 - since the Bavarian Prime Minister Söder announced the disaster today, these run-off elections will only take place as postal votes.
