Zagreb.
In the morning hours on Sunday March 22, Croatia was hit by severe earthquakes. Between 5.30 and 7.30 a.m. several tremors of magnitude 5 - 5.5 shook parts of the country on the Richter scale. The epicenter was in the municipality of Kasina, north of the capital, Zagreb. There were even easier aftershocks on Monday, March 23.
Almost 30 people were injured in the earthquake, and around 300 buildings were damaged in Zagreb alone. It is considered the worst earthquake since the great earthquake of 1880.
Croatia had activated the EU civil protection mechanism. The mechanism serves to regulate increased cooperation among EU countries in the event of disasters. Austria, Slovenia, Italy and Hungary have provided emergency aid and tents, folding beds, radiant heaters and sleeping bags.
The regions of Zagreb and Krapina-Zagorje, which are particularly affected, are members of the European Network of the Institute of the Regions of Europe (IRE). Franz Schausberger expressed his sympathy to the two Župans Stjepan Kožić (Zagreb region) and Željko Kolar (Krapina-Zagorje) in a personal letter. This severe earthquake, particularly in the times of the Corona crisis, was an additional serious misfortune for the regions affected, for their people and for those responsible for politics. Schausberger wished those responsible a lot of strength to master these great challenges and offered the support of the Institute of the Regions of Europe.
