Brčko District as positive example

From June 10 to 12, 2025, a delegation from the Institute of European Regions (IRE) visited the District and city of Brčko, a long-standing member of the IRE. The delegation included Franz Schausberger, Hermann Prem, Joachim Fritz, Zoran Šijaković, Mujo Hadžić, and Anita Luketina.

In a discussion with Miroslav Geljić, Minister of the Brčko Government, and Deputy Mayor Anto Domić about the domestic political situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina and its relationship with the European Union, Franz Schausberger emphasized that Brčko, as a multi-ethnic community, should be considered a model for the entire country. This would also facilitate EU integration.
The Vice President of the Brčko Assembly, Ivo Filipović, emphasized that in a referendum on EU accession, a large majority of the population would vote for the EU. In Brčko, ethnic groups live together, not just side by side.
Brčko District is a de facto self-governing district in northeastern Bosnia and Herzegovina. Created in 1999, 84,000 people live in this multi-ethnic area. The capital, Brčko City, is beautifully situated on the banks of the Sava River.
